Much disappointment, but lots of pride and accomplishment for a great 2010 season. We will miss our boys of fall! Congratulations to the entire Wildcat Team on a job well done.
Sometimes high school football playoff games live up to their billing. Sometimes, they are duds. For the people in attendance at the Class 5A playoff game in Marion between the host Wildcats and Springfield High School, those who paid definitely got their money's worth. Tyrell Bolden lobbed a 20-yard scoring pass to Pat Doty in double coverage with 2:34 left in the ball game. Emory Woodson then snagged a tipped pass with 54 seconds left and the Senators escaped with a 47-45 win. Springfield advances to the quarterfinals, where it will play Central State Eight Conference foe Chatham-Glenwood. The Senators are 9-2. Marion ends it season with an identical 9-2 record. "It was just an up and down ball game," said Marion coach Kerry Martin. "Both teams played outstanding football. It was a see-saw battle for four quarters and just when we thought we were down our kids came back and I thought they did the same thing." But it was Springfield with just one more play in the tank. After Bolden's pass to Doty, Marion moved the ball down field, hoping to get at least into field goal range. But on first down at the Springfield 36, Brett Bradley's pass intended for Ryan Null was off of Null's hands and caught by Woodson to preserve the win. "We were absolutely sure we were going to get the ball inside the 30 yard line and kick a field goal to win it," Martin said. "There was no doubt in my mind. And we were about 10 or 12 yards away from that. They got a tip and it made a difference in the drive." "We were able to earn a break and the end and we capitalized on it and Emory came down with the ball in his hands," said Springfield coach Mike Taylor. The game went back and forth from the start. The Senators looked poised to win going away after scoring twice in the first 5:11 of the game to take a 15-0 lead. But a 59-yard touchdown run by Cedrick Neal and a safety when Colin Soldner tackled Lonnie Lucas turned the game. "The Cedrick touchdown and the safety put us right back in the ball game," Martin said. Even when Bolden hooked up with DeCarlos Poole on an 83-yard pass to give the Senators a 21-9 lead with 1:28 left in the first quarter, the Wildcats had an answer. Shekeil Ivy, who ran for 208 yards, scored the first of his three touchdowns on 1-yard run with 8:05 remaining in the first half. Dylon Woolard intercepted a bolden pass at the Springfield 45, and Ivy scored again, this time from 5 yards to give Marion a 23-21 lead. Springfield scored twice more before the half, once on an 18-yard run by by Chase Thompson to give the Senators a 29-23 lead. After Bradley hit Jay Riley on a 15-yard scoring strike just 1:20 before the half, the Senators went 52 yards in 62 seconds to lead 35-30, with Bolden connecting with Doty on a 13-yard pass. "Both teams made so many big plays," Martin said. "Maybe they just made one more than us." It looked like Marion had enough big plays to win in the second half. Trailing 41-30 after a 40-yard strike from Bolden to Poole, the Wildcats bounced right back. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Bradley threw a screen pass to Neal, who got around the corner and bolted down the sideline 32 yards for a score. Ivy's two-point conversion run cut the Springfield lead to 41-38. Marion then forced a Springfield punt, taking over at the Wildcat 49. Four plays later, Ivy broke through for a 39-yard scoring run and Marion had a 45-41 lead. Springfield had just enough time, going 76 yards on 10 plays, the final one being the Bolden to Doty pass just out of the reach of Null and safety Jake Weaver. Bolden finished the game 14-for-27 passing for 308 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 93 yards, accounting for 401 of Springfield's 453 total yards in offense. Ivy had 35 carries for his 208 yards. Neal had 74 yards on the ground while Marcus Green added 52. Bradley was 11-for-22 for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Marion had 519 yards.
All in all it was a great game and the Wildcats had a great season!!!
